In the Bible, there is a
story of a jailer in the
city of Philippi. One day Roman soldiers arrested
two men, beat them and
brought them to the jail. There was nothing unusual about
that except the
arrested men were Christians – the Apostle Paul and his co-worker
Silas. The jailer noticed these men were different,
but he
didn’t understand why. He listened to them speaking and
singing in their cell all evening
until he fell asleep. In the middle of the night, an
earthquake
caused all the prison doors to open, but instead of escaping, every
single prisoner stayed put. They were so interested in what
Paul
and Silas were saying they didn’t want to leave. In
utter
amazement, the jailer stumbled into Paul and Silas’ cell and blurted
out the question he had wanted to ask all night, “What must I do to be
saved?”
Paul and Silas’ answer could hardly have been more simple, “
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you
will be saved.”
Is
it really that simple? Well, yes and no. One of the
amazing
things about the Gospel - God's good news - is that it is at the same
time both extremely
simple and profoundly complex. It’s so simple even a child
can
understand the basic premise, yet it’s so profound you could
spend
your entire lifetime studying and never exhaust what God has told us
about it. This is one of the purposes of the Church – to help
God’s people better understand the great salvation God has given to
them and what God has called them to do.
We have resources
available on our site to help you answer the jailer's question, "What
must I do to be saved?" We urge you to read this booklet
titled "
Come to Me".
